Our Lady of Sorrows
September 15th
The Dalcahue church was constructed upon the foundations of an old mission chapel raised by the Jesuits. As happened in other towns across the archipelago, the esplanade in front of the church was transformed into the main square of the town.
The wooden carved image of the patroness, Our Lady of Sorrows, is adorned with a beautifully handwoven woolen dress, along with earrings made of wood and plant fiber. Also noteworthy are the 12 stations of the cross, finely carved in wood.
The Christ figure situated behind the altar is fitted with hinges at the shoulders and removable nails, indicating that it was designed for the 'desclave' ceremony, which takes place on Good Friday. This ceremony commemorates the moment when Jesus’ body was removed from the cross after the crucifixion.
