Our Lady of the Rosary
August 30th (Jesús of Nazareno)
The church of Chelín is one of the most remote in the archipelago, making it not easily accessible. It stands out for its striking facade, decorated with six neoclassical columns and two circular windows.
Inside, it is distinguished from other churches in the archipelago by its predominant white paint, which gives it remarkable brightness and cleanliness. Similar to the churches of Nercón and Detif, the paint on its interior columns mimics marble.
Although its official patroness is Our Lady of the Rosary, the main feast celebrated on the island is in honor of Jesus of Nazareth.
A path leads to a traditional cemetery, with graves in the form of small Chilote houses, serving as residences for the souls of the deceased. Further up the same path, there is the Grotto of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, from which one can enjoy a panoramic view of the church and its forecourt, the locality of Chelín, and across the channel, the island of Quehui.
Walking along a path surrounded by nature, crossing the cemetery, you will find the grotto where you can contemplate a wide view of the church and its esplanade, the town of Chelín, and, on the other side of the stream, the island of Quehui.
It´s the closest island to Chelín, it hosts shipyards, the route of ancestral trades, a replica of a chona’s mummy and a church.
